Why Water Ballast?

Why Water Ballast? The LS7 flys flatter at high speed {above 150 km/hr) with 100 litres of water in the bags in the leading edge of the wings It climbs slower but if the rate of climb is greater than 400 feet/min, the water ballast can increase the average speed by up to 15%. . The water ballast has to be dropped before landing as it wuld difficult to keep the landing run to a suitable length and the extra weight could overload the landing gear.
